The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services reports that November is National Adoption Month, which has the goal of raising awareness about the adoption of children and youth from foster care. According to the Department, there are currently 115,000 children in the United States that are in foster care waiting for adoptive families.

National Adoption Month is also sponsored by the organizations AdoptUsKids and Child Welfare Information Gateway. These organizations not only provide resources on adoption-related services but also do work to prevent child abuse and neglect within a home.

The month of November is a great time for prospective parents thinking of adoption to learn more about the adoption process. Parents that are familiar with the adoption process should also encourage others in the Houston community to consider adopting.

If you're not quite sure on where to begin with the adoption process, it might be a good idea to talk with a Houston adoption attorney to learn more about the legal procedures and costs associated with adopting. FindLaw states that adopting through a private agency or going through with an independent adoption can cost as much as $40,000. However, a foster care adoption might not cost any money at all. With careful planning and the knowledge about the different types of adoptions, prospective parents should be able to develop a budget that includes most of the foreseeable expenses.
