Houston’s world-famous singer, Beyonce Knowles, is currently married to Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z, and while you would think that would be the relationship going through difficulties, it is actually Beyonce’s parents that are divorcing, reports the New York Post.
Mathew and Tina Knowles were married for 31 years before their divorce finalized, reports TMZ. The couple filed for divorce back in November, 2009, after Tina Knowles discovered that her husband had had an affair and fathered a child with another woman. But there was a period when it looked like they might reconcile; though eventually the divorce did go ahead. In that time, Tina started a business with her daughter, a fashion line called the House of Dereon.
The decision to start a business while still being married to a man she was considering divorcing is not the best idea, from a legal stand-point. Of course, in divorces emotion often over-rides legal significance.
Still, Tina Knowles probably should have waited to embark on her business until after the divorce was finalized. This is because Texas is one of the nine community property states in the country. In a community property jurisdiction, the property or income acquired by either spouse during marriage is generally considered equally owned by both spouses. Maybe mom didn’t consult with Beyonce’s attorneys.
Of course, that does not automatically mean that Mathew Knowles will get to keep half of the profit from the House of Dereon. Sometimes judges use their own particular discretion to make the community property split. In fact, in Texas, this approach is called the “just-and-right” method.
