It wasn't enough for the South to be the best at football. Now the South gets to cut the cake for the highest divorce rate, too, leaving the Northeast to have the lowest divorce rate in the United States.
According to the U.S. Census Report, in 2009, the southern part of the country had the highest divorce rate, reports KHOU. The divorce rate in the United States was 9.2 for every 1,000 men and 9.7 for women. However, in the southern parts of the country the divorce rate was a point higher across the board.
People evaluating the divorce rate USA found that people married more in the southern part of the country and those in the Northeast married later. There's no real reason for this except maybe we in the south, as the saying goes, are more fond of rings: the engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffer-ring.
All these divorces mean that when Texans marry, maybe they should pay as much attention to the divorce laws as they do the venue and the cake.
The most important thing about Texas divorce is that Texas is a community property state. Texas is one of nine states with a history going back to Spanish Law where "community property" laws apply. In a community property state, the property or income acquired by either spouse during marriage is, with certain exceptions, generally considered equally owned by both spouses.
The Census report didn't say whether it included the marriages and divorces of polygamists in the evaluation about the highest divorce rate. That might have helped, or hurt, just a bit.
