A 6-year-old boy named Tekerrious died on Sunday in the Houston area after his father allegedly beat him for eight hours during an all night disciplinary session. The boy's father Alex McGowen Duncan was booked on $50,000 and charged with first degree murder, according to KIAH News.

Alex Duncan's girlfriend, Tammyra Sampson, has also reportedly been charged with injury to a child by omission. The woman allegedly witnessed the beating and only intervened to show her boyfriend how to whip the child with a belt. Tammyra Sampson has two children of her own and they have been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services since her arrest.

The state of Texas does have the authority to terminate a parent's rights if family courts find that the mother or father is no longer suited to be a parent. Statute 161.001 of the Texas Family Code provides circumstances that are grounds for parental termination. These circumstances include instances of abuse or neglect, felony assault of child, sexual abuse, and many other abuse related circumstances.

Tammyra Sampson may need to contact a Houston family law attorney if she wants to keep custody of her two children. In this situation, a Houston family law attorney might be able to argue that the parental termination is not in the child's best interest, even if the mother is convicted of the injury to a child by omission.
