Researchers followed the development of preschool-age children adopted at birth by 27 lesbian couples, 29 gay male couples and 50 heterosexual couples, most of which were in the D.C. and Mid-Atlantic region. The authors of the study wrote, "Regardless of whether their parents were lesbian, gay or heterosexual, most boys exhibited behavior typical of other same-aged boys, and most girls exhibited behavior typical of other same-aged girls."
In addition to these findings, the study also concluded that children raised by same-sex couples are just as well off as the children raised by heterosexual couples and that the quality of parenting plays a much bigger role in the child than does sexual orientation of the parents. So then why do some U.S. states and adoption agencies still hold bans on gay adoption?
The state of Texas doesn't specifically have a law that prohibits gay adoption, but some private adoption agencies do not offer adoption services to same-sex couples and other agencies give preferential treatment to heterosexual couples when it comes to the adoption process. Gay or lesbian couples seeking to adopt a child in Texas should contact a Houston adoption attorney to learn about the best adoption options for same-sex couples and how to go about starting the process of adoption.
